1. Introduction
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), approved at the United Nations Summit in September 2015, are an ambitious agenda, which should be implemented by all countries in the World by 2030.
“The achievement of the SDGs will depend not only on the commitment of governments, but also on the involvement of citizens. Children and young people are central to this global call for participation and school is essential to raise awareness of the new global agenda, to inspire and encourage people to participate in community development.” (UNICEF)
Aware of the importance and magnitude of these Goals, the Municipal Network of Public Reading started in school year 2019/2020, a whole activity program centered on this theme. The aim is to make the SDGs known to the school public, through a set of initiatives related to reading and writing.
2. Framework
The Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, through the Municipal Public Reading Network, started, in the academic year 2019/2020, a creative writing contest called “tODoS por um mundo melhor”, aimed at students in the 2nd and 3rd CEB of the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, whose theme is the Sustainable Development Goals.
For each academic year, three SDGs will be approached with the classes registered for the competition. The three SDGs will serve as the main theme of the text / story that will be produced in a creative writing workshop, in the context of the classroom, in a discipline to be designated. Each class enrolled in the competition must present three texts / stories, one for each SDG addressed in the presentation session.
The final texts / stories sent in competition are subject to an evaluation and selection by a designated jury and, after the selection of the winning works, they will be edited and transformed into an interactive digital story.
